Our mission
VineVellum teaches home gardeners to understand plants, seasons, and soil so they can make confident, lasting choices. We focus on clear explanations, practical steps, and the gardening principles that help you learn for a lifetime—not just follow a recipe.
How we teach — five guiding principles
1. Learn by doing
Each piece pairs a short explanation of the underlying principle with hands-on steps you can try in your yard or containers. We emphasize observation, small experiments, and repeatable routines.
2. Evidence first
We rely on a mix of sources: university extension publications, peer-reviewed horticulture research, field-tested books, and interviews with experienced growers. When evidence is mixed, we show the tradeoffs and the context.
3. Seasonal thinking
Gardening is cyclical. Our content is organized around seasons and tasks so you know what to do now, what to plan for next month, and how to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
4. Clear attribution
Every article includes a byline and date stamp. Key claims link back to their sources so you can read the original material. Corrections and updates are noted on the article page.
5. Practical sustainability
We favor methods that build soil, conserve water, and reduce dependence on single-use chemicals. Where conventional methods are effective, we explain them and outline lower-impact alternatives.

Editorial standards
Articles are written by authors with gardening experience and reviewed by at least one subject-matter editor. We cite university extensions, scientific journals, horticultural texts, and primary interviews. Every piece shows the author, the publication date, and a note when it was updated.
Independence and transparency
VineVellum operates independently. Editorial decisions are made by our editorial team; sponsors and advertisers do not influence coverage. When content is sponsored or when we receive products for review, that relationship is clearly disclosed in the article.
Monetization note
To support the site we use tasteful display ads and sometimes include affiliate links to products we test. Affiliate links may earn us a small commission at no extra cost to you; we only link to items we would recommend or test firsthand.
